When I built a PC last year, the thing I overlooked – or at least didn’t give much thought to at first – was the monitor. Although it’s the component we most connect with next to the actual inputs, it’s easy to take your screen for granted. But ViewSonic’s VX2718-PC-mhd monitor gave me a new appreciation for this area.

The VX2718-PC-mhd is a 27-inch curved gaming monitor, part of ViewSonic’s VX Entertainment series and therefore a more casual alternative to their XG range for hardcore gamers. I was immediately impressed with its size and its solid construction, measuring 24″ x 18.7″ x 8.8″ and perched atop a bi-fold stand.

At first, however, my eyes weren’t quite sure how to pick up its curved screen. According to ViewSonic’s own literature, curved monitors provide a more immersive experience with less distortion and more field of view than flat monitors. They’re supposed to be more comfortable for your eyes, but I definitely took some time to adjust to.

After a few weeks of prolonged use and occasional readjustments, I had forgotten that the VX2718-PC-mhd was curved. The display is totally natural now, looks great from all angles and really stresses my eyes out less. With my vision, a few hours staring at traditional computer screens would have me running for my glasses, but not with ViewSonic’s modern screen.

For input, the VX2718-PC-mhd offers two HDMI ports and one DisplayPort, with switching handled by the five convenient menu buttons below the monitor. This versatility was a good surprise, especially after leaving a double DVA and VGI configuration. With this, it is possible to turn your office into a media center without the need for a dedicated TV for your game consoles, which can potentially save space in tighter workspaces by forgoing a second monitor .

Another pleasant surprise was its dual-integrated speakers. While they’re not up to par with more advanced solutions, they offer respectable sound that’s suitable for situations where you might want to forgo headphones.

Few cons come to mind for the VX2718-PC-mhd. It can be tilted up or down on its stand, but not horizontally, which can cause issues for some setups. I also found its brightness initially overwhelming at full power, but thankfully it still looks great at lower levels, which can easily be toggled with Eco modes. Likewise, the volume tops out a bit higher than I like from a device that sits in my face.

However, if you’re lucky enough to have gotten one of today’s best video cards, the VX series may not offer enough raw power to get the most out of it. The VX2718-PC-mhd tops out at 1920×1080, while a 3070ti will want 2560×1480 or more.

After months of use in everyday situations and gaming, I can’t recommend this monitor highly enough for those with more modest GPUs. It looks like one of the most impressive components of my new gaming PC setup, from its high-performance output to the icing-on-the-cake bonuses like the extra inputs and speakers. It offers plenty of power and convenience at a respectable price, which should serve the majority of gamers pretty well.

Count me fully into the curved monitor camp. In fact, I now dream of grabbing a second unit to build my own half panopticon of quality screens.
