As one of the biggest names in the recovery game, Therabody has produced many quality products that can easily – and efficiently – adapt to our lifestyles and our routines. But what’s one area that a lot of people – looking at you guys – fail to address?
That’s right: our faces.
In an effort to get started, as Therabody Founder Jason Wersland, DC says, “Thinking shoulders up,” Therabody has launched the TheraFace Pro, the ultimate facial health device. Fusing science-backed treatments and innovative technology, TheraFace Pro brings together five modalities to help lift, tone, rejuvenate and cleanse your skin:
- Percussion therapy optimized for the face
- Red, blue and red + infrared LED treatments
- Microcurrent treatment
- Cleansing care
- Hot and cold cryothermal treatments (sold separately)
All of these potential modalities combine in an effort to give you a truly personalized routine in the palm of your hand. Over the course of a week, we added TheraFace Pro to our daily skincare regimens to see how revolutionary this new product was. We alternated between the different attachments to find the one that benefited our skin the most, and then stuck with those for the rest of the week.
TheraFace Pro Creates a Whole New Category
After hearing requests from users asking if Therabody’s Theragun Mini could be used on the face, Wersland and his team began exploring how they could create a device that not only optimizes percussive therapy for this area, but also adds to the overall health and well-being of our skin.
“Our face has layers. There is the outer layer, the skin that you see. There’s the superficial layer, which is the subcutaneous layer that contains the lymphatic vessels, blood flow, nerves and all those things. They sit just under the skin. And then you have the muscles and the tissues under that layer,” says Wersland. “All of the products we’ve designed have been designed to work on either one of these layers, or on two layers at the same time.”
The idea surrounding facial health, according to Therabody, is not just about beauty or aesthetics, but rather about “taking care of your skin.” As a result, this inclusive approach breaks down the wall for users, giving them the opportunity to experience several professional treatments at home. From reducing jaw muscle tension to deep cleansing abilities, revitalizing light treatments and more, you are able to put together a well-rounded routine tailored to your specific needs.
Modality 1: Percussion therapy for the face
The TheraFace Pro offers three attachments for a blend of treatments optimized specifically for face and skin:
- Flat for general use on the entire face, neck and chest
- Micro-stitch to maximize circulation on larger samples like forehead, cheeks and chest
- Cone for precise treatment of pressure points and around the eyes and nasolabial wrinkles
The 3mm amplitude and three available speeds (1750, 2100 and 2400 pulses per minute) help you reduce tension in your facial muscles while creating a relaxing feeling on your skin. To get even more out of TheraFace Pro, you can combine the benefits of percussive therapy with red and red+infrared treatments for a targeted skin routine that works twice to rejuvenate and relieve. We’ve found that combining percussive therapy with Red + Infrared LED treatment after our normal skincare routines also dramatically maximizes the absorption of our favorite products.
We do note, however, that combining percussion therapy with blue LED treatment is not recommended, as this can potentially spread acne-causing bacteria and lead to more blemishes.
Modality 2: cleaning by percussion
We know that clean our skin takes some effort, but how deep do we really get with our normal scrubs? The TheraFace Pro Cleansing Ring brings the added benefits of percussive therapy into the process – and the results are, well, brilliant.
Percussion therapy can help relax skin tissue, allowing easier release of dirt, oil, and debris. The three speeds available are powerful enough for an exfoliating sensation, but gentle enough not to give an aggressive scrubbing.
In testing, we found the percussive qualities to be welcoming, enhancing our normal cleaning routines. The percussion wasn’t overwhelming and produced a “glow” that wasn’t as easily achieved in previous washes. When paired with a daily cleanser, the results speak volumes, but combining the cleansing ring with other exfoliators may be too much for some users.
Small note: the cleaning ring is water resistant, but not waterproof. Therabody recommends removing the cleaning ring before washing off any excess debris or cleaner.
Modality 3: LED light therapy
Light-emitting diode, or LED, treatments have become popular in recent years due to their non-invasive treatment and rejuvenating results. The TheraFace Pro is three LED treatments in one for a multitude of uses:
- Red light to help reduce periorbital wrinkles (wrinkles around the eyes)
- Blue light to help reduce mild to moderate acne
- Red + infrared light to help reduce periorbital wrinkles and provide a warm sensation for muscle relaxation
Using the LED treatments was easy with the included proximity sensor system. The TheraFace Pro automatically detects when the ring is close enough to your face – 0.5 inches – for maximum brightness, which has helped reduce glare when maneuvering and switching between options. The flat percussion attachment can also rest on the device during LED modalities, which certainly served as a helpful guide to how close to the skin to get for optimal treatment.
Modality 4: microcurrent treatment
Our favorite accessory
One of the most professional modalities offered in TheraFace Pro is microcurrent therapy. This low level electrical voltage works at the cellular level to stimulate the muscles, and the tightened and toned results can be seen quite quickly.
To safely and effectively use micro-current therapy, a conductive gel (included) must be placed on the skin before use. Once you have placed a thin layer on the face, you can move the microcurrent head over the skin. According to Therabody, you want to move the device in a direction that tightens, tones and lifts the skin. For example, if you want to tighten the cheeks, move from the chin up towards the ear. The microcurrent modality is recommended once every 24 hours.
We found the micro-current modality to be one of our favorites as the results were immediately noticeable and provided a great boost, especially in the morning. Additionally, we have noticed that it is important to ensure good coverage with the conductive gel before use. After all, it’s an electric current on your skin. This treatment can be uncomfortable if not combined with the conductive gel, so exercise caution.
Also pay attention to eyebrows and, especially for men, facial hair. Protruding follicles can serve as miniature lightning rods, which can be an unpleasant feeling at the start of the day.
Modality 5: Cryothermal therapy for the face
In addition to the included treatments, Therabody also offers a hot and cold cryothermal kit for another layer of facial health. These accessories, sold separately, come in a convenient carrying case designed specifically for temperature control, so the accessories remain as efficient as possible, regardless of the outdoor conditions.
The hot cryothermal attachment can provide soothing blood flow and relief at temperatures of 95, 102, and 109 degrees. Meanwhile, the cooling ring offers settings of 78, 71, and 65 degrees for safe, spot treatments.
We really enjoyed the hot attachment as a therapeutic pain reliever, especially around the jawline and nose. Wersland also notes that the attachment to cold can be an excellent after shave treatment for a refreshing and pleasant feeling.
TheraFace Pro: the verdict
With a variety of treatments, easy-to-use modalities, and an ergonomic profile, the TheraFace Pro seems like a solid choice for our daily skincare routines. The whole kit comes in a handy carryall, making it very portable when travelling. Additionally, there’s an included 15-second timer that beeps while the device is in use, providing a better idea of how long the modalities are in use. And finally, for those new to their skincare regimen, Therabody has provided a handy QR code that provides access to helpful guides on protocols and how to get the most out of TheraFace Pro.
The TheraFace Pro is available online for $399, starting today, in black or white colorways. Separate cryothermal attachments are also available for an additional $99. While that may seem steep to some, remember you’re essentially getting four devices in one. At $100 each, it’s enough to make us rethink the way we treat our faces.
