The first new Mobile Suit Gundam series in several years and a brand new animated film have both been announced for release in 2022.
Mobile Suit Gundam is one of the most influential animated series of all time, especially in terms of influencing global cinema and television. In the decades since its introduction, animated series and films have been steadily produced for fans around the world, and this trend is now expected to continue into next year. The first new Mobile combination Gundam series for several years and a new Mobile Suit Gundam The animated films have both been announced for release in 2022.
The last Gundam the series that aired to fans was Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blood Orphans, which aired from 2015 to 2017 and told the story of young soldiers rebelling against corrupt superiors on a terraformed Mars. The series has enjoyed critical and commercial success, garnering huge viewership numbers for streaming services such as Crunchyroll and numerous award nominations (such as those at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, where it was nominated in categories such as Best Action. and Best Continuing Series).
New Gundam the series is called Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch Of Mercury, although no other information outside of the title and the 2022 release window has yet been released. The film is titled Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan Island and is based on an eponymous episode of the groundbreaking original series, with the animation director of the original series, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, as the director of the new film. Both projects are developed by Studio Sunrise, which has historically been in charge of Gundam franchise throughout its decades and, notably, are also responsible for the recent serial adaptation of Bandai Namco’s film Scarlet Nexus, among other titles.
The announcement of more Mobile Suit Gundam Anime content comes at a time when pop culture is paying more and more attention to legacy anime franchises. Netflix is ââworking on a Cowboy Bebop live action series as well as a Mobile Suit Gundam live action movie, while Neon Genesis Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0: Once Upon A Three Times recently broke records for the high viewership it received in its first 24 hours of streaming availability on Amazon Prime.
Mobile Suit Gundam is one of the largest and most recognizable media franchises in the world, and a new iteration of the series will help the franchise maintain its status while potentially gaining new fans along the way. It will be fascinating to examine the extent to which the world pays attention to these new anime offerings.
